Sustainability reporting is essentially how airlines and aviation stakeholders measure, disclose, and verify their environmental impact.


Sustainability Reporting plays three major roles:

Accountability & Compliance

  • Airlines must comply with international, regional, and national regulations (e.g., ICAOs CORSIA, EU ETS, ReFuelEU Aviation).

  • Reporting provides the evidence base for emissions offsetting obligations, SAF mandates, and compliance with climate policies.

Transparency & Benchmarking

  • Investors, regulators, and passengers want to see progress toward decarbonization.

  • Airlines report CO emissions, fuel efficiency, SAF usage, contrail mitigation strategies, and climate risk.

  • These reports align with global frameworks like GRI, TCFD, and CSRD (in the EU).

Operational Improvement

  • Sustainability reporting isnt just regulatoryit also feeds back into operations.

  • Data on fuel burn, emissions, and contrails helps airlines benchmark performance, reduce costs, and set climate targets (e.g., IATAs net-zero by 2050).

Flight planning software and services sit at the data-gathering and verification core of sustainability reporting.


  1. Accurate Data Capture

Every flight generates data on fuel uplift, burn, routing, and emissions.

Flight planning systems calculate:

  • CO emissions (based on actual fuel usage).

  • Non-CO indicators (contrail likelihood, NOx).

  • Fuel type (conventional Jet A-1 vs. SAF blends).

Many airlines integrate flight planning software with carbon accounting tools and enterprise reporting systems.
This enables streamlined reporting under ESG frameworks and ensures alignment with investor/market expectations.

Regulations (e.g., CORSIA, EU ETS) require verifiable emissions data.

Flight planning tools automate MRV by:

  • Logging SAF usage at specific uplift locations.

  • Assigning emissions factors to different fuel types.

  • Generating standardized compliance reports for authorities.

As hydrogen and electric aircraft emerge, flight planning tools will:

  • Track energy consumption instead of fuel burn.

  • Report new sustainability metrics (e.g., hydrogen leakage, renewable energy sourcing).
